The word democracy was coined in the ancient Greek language and is typically thought of in association with societal governance. Perhaps the word demokratis (people’s rule) could be recognized as containing an expanded meaning. A connotative application might recognize that in the context of empowering the people, it is understood that each person is such a vital constituent of the demos (people) that individual will is recognized as part of the greater body of authority granted by the kratis. (rule) To go a little further, democracy, then, might include a recognition of the will of the person to make choices and enjoy a degree of autonomy.
We can entertain the idea that every person, regardless of the regime or institution under which they live, naturally longs for personal choice. In this sense, they are naturally longing for people’s rule. They are longing for a kind of democracy.
The Aprinia task is quite simple, though seemingly daunting. Honor individual rights to think and act on a responsible, elevated, dignified plane, and we will, through person or group, honor the real intention of democracy. It is safe to say that in the world of reality, and in the non-competitive sense, all people want democracy.
